School of Intuitive Herbalism

Learning from the plants directly

Community Connections & Power Dynamics

Our school grew slowly and organically—from six people exploring the worlds of plants and possibility, with no fixed outcome in mind, to the structured and substantial Insight Herbalism training we offer today. That early spirit of mutuality, curiosity, and connection remains at the heart of what we do.

We deeply value the friendships, collaborations, and peer networks that form around the school. These community ties are not just welcome—they’re essential. It is real connection to people that sustains and supports you on this path.

At the same time, we recognise that community brings complexity. Interpersonal dynamics — especially when charged with emotional, romantic, or sexual energy — can sometimes create tension, distort group process, or undermine the trust that makes deep learning possible. With this in mind, we ask students to avoid romantic or sexual entanglements with one another during their time in training – and if this does arise, encourage a conversation with a tutor about this. We also hold a clear boundary that, whilst friendships and collaborations are absolutely welcome, tutors and assistants do not enter into intimate relationships with students.

This is not about moral judgement – it’s about acknowledging the often-invisible power dynamics and projections that can operate in learning environments. These boundaries exist to support safety, clarity, and trust for everyone.

Once a year, we host a dedicated Zoom session in winter on Power Dynamics in Learning Spaces, open to anyone currently in the training, or preparing to begin the Foundation year. It’s a space to name, explore, and gently unpick the ways power can show up — structurally, interpersonally, and internally. Experience has shown that there are many levels to unpick as we all move towards genuine equity and sovereignty and away from inherited structures of hierarchy and control.

We also warmly welcome questions, concerns, and open dialogue at any time. All of us have inherited complicated legacies around power — both in how we’ve held it and how it’s held us. Again and again, we find that honest conversation is a balm: helping to illuminate what may be hidden, and inviting us all to grow in integrity and awareness.
